The role of carbohydrates in sports nutrition

Our fueling products have a 1:0.8 carbohydrate ratio (glucose : fructose) because your body absorbs carbohydrates through two different transport systems in the gut:

  • Glucose is absorbed via the SGLT1 transporter (sodium-glucose transporter).
  • Fructose is absorbed via the GLUT5 transporter.

If you take only glucose, absorption capacity is limited (around 60 g/hour). By combining glucose with fructose at the right ratio (1:0.8), you can use both pathways, increasing total carbohydrate absorption up to ~90 g/hour.

This means more energy delivery, less gut discomfort, and better endurance performance during long or intense exercise.
